Description
A house robber shot himself in the leg while trying to escape after holding up a family in Greenhills Extention three.
Seven men apparently parked their BMW in the driveway, entered the house and attacked a woman and her 12-year old daughter, their domestic worker and their gardener.
They forced the victims into their house and tied them up.
The suspects then demanded valuable items from their hostages and managed to bag jewellery and cellphones.
However during this time, the victim's husband returned home to find his wife, daughter, and his employees tied up with thugs inside his house.
He too was overpowered and tied up.
While the suspects were busy tying up the husband, one of the other victims managed to press a panic button.
Reaction officers from their security company responded to the alarm and went to investigate.
Upon arrival at the scene, the suspects saw the officers approaching the house and decided to make a run for it.
One of the robbers' firearms went off as he scaled the wall and he was shot in the leg.
The bullet apparently severed an artery and the robber only managed to flee for about 200 metres before he collapsed and bled to death.
Randfontein SAPS spokesperson, Captain Appel Ernst has confirmed the incident and says that police officers confiscated the suspect's vehicle on the scene.
No other arrests have been made.
"The investigators found two other 9mm firearms lost by the robbers during their escape with their serial numbers filed off."
The K9 unit assisted in tracking on the scene, but could not find anything.
She adds that all possible leads are being followed and more arrests are expected.
